Are Dictionaries Even Relevant Anymore?

The Oxford English dictionary released its list of new words recently. Among the recently added were:

  • Heart – as a verb. As in “I heart adding new words to the dictionary.”
  • OMG – shorthand for “Oh my God.”
  • LOL – shorthand for “Laughing out loud.”

Is this what the dictionary has become? A repository of shorthand? A list of acronyms? These aren’t words. These quick ways to write a series of words. Acronyms are nothing new, but they don’t belong in the dictionary. WORDS belong in the dictionary.

Which brings up a bigger question, do we even really need the dictionary anymore? Or is it one of those relics from olden times, like an encyclopedia? In real life, words are whatever we say they are. If I used a word enough, and other people start repeating it, and on and on, isn’t it now a word?

Do we really need some ivory tower eggheads to tell us what is and isn’t a word?

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t have definitions but do we need a governing body to rule it? or can we leave it to the wisdom of the crowds. I

Stuff I Liked From 2010

Inspired by Gareth Kay, and as a follow up to my predictions for 2011, here is a look back at some of my favorite things from 2010.

iPhone app: TwitterIt’s not the most advanced app around, and certainly not the first Twitter app, but it is the official one and it works really well. It was a great movie by Twitter to acquire a very popular app and make it the official one, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.

Twitter iPhone App

iPad app: flipboard – I still don’t own an iPad and probably won’t for some time. But if anything is going to make me buy one it’s this app. Flipboard pulls all the content from your social graph into an easy to consume “magazine.”

Website: We’re all fans – what better way to celebrate musicians and their fans?

We're All Fans

Gadget: Xbox KinectRadically re-imagining the way we play video games. It’s incredible and yet still primitive. But it shows the way that wind is blowing.

Meme: Bed Intruder – What can I say about this that hasn’t already been said?

…and the remix:

New TV show: The Walking Dead – After the first episode AMC ordered a full season for next year. That’s how good it is.

Movie: Its a three-way tie between The Social Network, Inception, and Black Swan

Blogging about #CleanWater for #BAD10

Today is Blog Action Day 2010, which is focused on clean water.  Clean water, or rather lack thereof is a major problem. One that rarely gets talked about in the mainstream media. So really, how bad is it?

How McDonald’s Monopoly is Like the Prisoner’s Dilemma.

When I was younger I used to love the McDonald’s Monopoly game (truth be told, I also used to love McDonald’s).  It was a great added reward for doing something I already liked doing. Not to mention there was a chance you could win all sorts of great prizes.

Unfortunately I never won anything. Even when I cheated.

Batteries – The Final Frontier

Sitting at the gate, waiting to take off on my virgin Virgin Atlantic flight I find myself constantly checking my battery power. I’m watching the percentage drop on my iPhone with every text, starting at the battery meter on my Kindle wondering if I will have enough juice left to make it through the six-hour flight and then there’s my laptop. It was near 100% when I left the office, but where will it be when I open it halfway through m trip.

And that’s why batteries are going to be the next technology battle ground.

Another Idea I Should Have Moved On.

In the long list of ideas that I had that I never did anything about and were stolen, this was a fairly recent one. As soon as I received my first Google Voice transcription I knew that they were destined for hilarity.  How great would a blog be where people could submit their hilarious mis-transcribed Google Voice voicemails.

The day has finally come!

LOST!

I can’t believe that after 5 long years (I started watching while the 2nd season was on the air) my biggest TV obsession since The Simpsons is coming to an end. While I am sure to get months of nerdy enjoyment out of analyzing the end of the series and thinking about all the questions still left unanswered, eventually it will fade out into a memory as fuzzy as the ones below.

Based on what I remember, this is what my life was like when I started watching Lost:

Say what you want about Ke$ha and her sex hair…

But you have to admit her song “Tik Tok” is pretty catchy.

Especially when it’s performed by America’s favorite family, The Simpsons.
