Learning Something New.

May 31, 2011 Leave a comment

When was the last time you learned something new? Not some obscure fact, or about a new startup, or the name of the new girl in accounting, but a new skill. While I (and I assume others) like to believe that I am always learning, always improving my skills, constantly gaining new insight, the truth is, I haven’t set out to learn something new in far too long. Until this weekend.

[UPDATED] THREE of my Favorites from the PSFK Conference.

May 5, 2011 1 Comment

I know that I promised you my presentation from the PSFK conference but it hasn’t been shown to my department yet, so you have to wait. But I do want to share the videos of my two THREE favorite sessions of the day.

The first is Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb.com. His story of creativity, ingenuity and determination (to not become homeless) is truly inspiring.

The second is from Aaron Dignan, founding partner at Undercurrent. His presentation, entitled “Why the future of work is play” is a great breakdown of the future of how we learn and improve our skills, as well as a critique of other so-called “games.”

The third was just released the other day, hence the update. Justin Gignac, a recovering art director, entrepreneur, innovator and all around awesome guy talks about his creative process and includes great advice like “Don’t be an asshole.”

I’ll share my takeaways from the conference soon, I promise.

How to Become a Planner*.

March 30, 2011 17 Comments

I’ve officially been a planner for a relatively short time, but I’ve been planning and influencing planning for a bit longer. I joined Digitas with the goal of being a planner and had to work my over from account management (or “Marketing” as we call it here). We have a small (but awesome) department, mostly made up of people with a lot more experience than me. We have, or have had, people who worked at big agencies, small agencies, been through planner boot camp at Miami Ad School or come from totally different worlds entirely.

But regardless of where we came from, we always get the question “How can I become a planner?”

If I Had A Car, Its Bumper Sticker Would Say “I’d Rather Be Conferencing.”

February 23, 2011 1 Comment

I love going to conferences. I don’t get to do it very often but every so often the stars align just so (i.e. my bosses approve my request to go) and I get to attend a conference and learn awesome stuff and meet interesting people.

Some highlights from the last few years include:

  • Bridging The Gap at Suffolk University
  • IAB Social Media Marketplace
  • Ad Age Creative and Technology Conference
  • MBA Media & Entertainment Conference (’06 and ’07, at NYU and Columbia, respectively)
  • Harvard Business School Marketing Conference
  • Harvard Business School Entertainment and Media Conference

My Intro to Advertising Presentation @ Howard University

October 25, 2010 3 Comments

Recently I was given the privilege of speaking to an “Intro to Advertising” class at Howard University.  My first thought was that I would just go in and wing it. Play a couple agency reels, show off some cool work and then take questions. Two days before the presentation it dawned on me that college undergrads can be notoriously quiet when it comes to asking questions of a guest speaker, especially at a 9am class on Monday morning.

Random Acts of Awesomeness.

October 18, 2010 Leave a comment

Videos sell products. Even if consumers don’t watch them. Even the presence of video content on an e-commerce page can help drive sales. How’s it work? People have more confidence in products that offer up videos. It means that the brand trusts it’s product enough to demo it for all to see and that you have made an investment in the e-retail experience.

Gareth Kay’s 10 Little Tips.

October 12, 2010 2 Comments

Over the last few weeks Gareth Kay, the Director of Brand Strategy at Goodby, Silverstein and Partners and strategy/planning rock star, has been posting his “10 Little Tips” to help advertising (and advertisers) get their mojo back.

Here they are, all in one place (along with my Twitterized versions of them):

  1. Two Heads are Better Than One – Don’t separate brand and media strategies – or strategists
  2. More Generalist, Fewer Specialists – Be interested in, and able to be interesting about, a broader set of skills, interests and things
  3. Be Recombinent – Combine technology with stories to create new types of narrative
  4. Be People Powered – Planners need to think about creating strategies that have an enthusiasm bigger than the brand or their category
  5. Turn Data into Meaning – Turn data into interesting bits of communication
  6. Get Out of the Messaging Business – Design ideas, not ads
  7. Break the Tyranny of The Big Idea – Don’t bet it all on one idea
  8. Be a Magazine Editor – Create stories that people want to read – and repeat.
  9. Get Obsessed By Games – Games are the dominent cultural narrative of today.
  10. Be Interesting, Not Right – The Planner’s job isn’t to be right. It’s to be interesting.

Words to live by. Thanks Gareth!
